Music Video Treatment

Music Video Treatment
Artist: Bastille
Song: Icarus
Director: Rebecca Warrington
Production Company:

Summary:
The video will be composed of three sections (present, future and subconscious) and show how how the main character deals with the loss of her partner to drink/drug abuse.

Overview:
The video will focuses on how the main character deals with the loss of her partner through drink/drug abuse and how his death haunts her through her everyday life. The main character (actress yet to be decided) will be filmed completing activities, such as:
  • Getting out of bed
  • Putting on makeup
  • Drinking Coffee
  • Putting on her shoes
  • Walking to the shop

The beginning of the selected song has a long musical introduction that features a low humming. To fill this section effectively the video will start out with a sequence of short clips helping to set the mood and scene that will be feature throughout the rest of the video. The short clips will feature solely the female character, showing the audience that she is on her own and that she is sad (this suggests that something might have happened to her). By doing this we will be able to quickly introduce the basic narrative that will run through the entire video without to much effort or confusion on the viewers behalf.

The introduction will mainly comprise of five or six short scenes filling up the time before the lyrics start. These short scenes will be:

  1. The girl asleep in bed (as shown in the far left above picture)
  2. The girl sitting up in bed, clearly having just woken up.
  3. The girl pulling on a baggy jumper over the top of leggings and a t-shirt
  4. The girl sitting in front of either a mirror or a camera (depending on how easy it will be to film using a mirror) - this scene will be a mash up of several filmed clips so that the viewer doesn't get bored watching her put her makeup on at normal speed.
  5. The girl sitting at the end of a large empty table with a cup of coffee, she will pour alcohol into the coffee from a hip flask and stir it in.
  6. Finally, The girl pulling on her shoes and getting up and walking until she is out of camera frame.
After the instrumental at the start of the video (which will have mainly showed the present) the video will then cut to the actress walking down a semi-busy street. If edited correctly this scene will smoothly connect with the previous scene by editing it so that she walks out of shot on the previous scene and then into shot on this scene.

This part of the music video will mainly show the subconscious element of the girls life, showing the reader how she is almost haunted by the memory of her partner, thinking that she see's him everywhere that she looks but then realising that he is not there. This part of the video will also contain subtle hints as to how she lost her partner, possible scrolling past missing posters or newspaper articles, showing his face on them.

As the video moves on and the actress is shown to get more distressed by seeing more and more of her partner everywhere she looks the video editing will then speed up until the actress is seen running down streets and alleyways as if to get away from her subconscious. As she runs the video will then quickly flicker between:
  • Clips of her running
  • Clips of ripping up newspaper articles missing posters and photos of her and her partner
  • Clips of her 'seeing' her partner
  • Clips of her burning papers in a bonfire
(The scenes with the fire and ripping of the papers bringing in the future element of the video, showing the reader that the events of the day have caused her to crack)

Finally, the video will start to come to an end with her coming face to face with her partner, during the scene the camera would then slowly pan around until it is an over the shoulder shot. The camera will then zoom in onto the actresses face to show her eyes full of tears (eliminating the edge of the guys head and shoulders in the process) before then zooming back out to show that she is in fact standing in front of a grave and not a person.

The video would then end with a clip of her slumping down onto the floor beside the fire.
